- ItemPreparation of Activated Carbon from Household Waste Materials(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Zahraa Hussein Ismaeel; Ali Amer Abdulkareem; Waqar Abdulwahid AbdulnabiAdsorption gained an important role in the purification, separation and recovery process at an industrial scale. Activated carbon is perhaps one of the most widely used adsorbents in industry for environmental applications such as the Water pollution because it is increasing due to the different factors such as population growth, large-scale urbanization, deforestation, and unethical activities in the river or other sources of water. Activated carbon are carbons of highly micro porous structure with both high internal surface area and porosity, and commercially the most common adsorbents used for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from air and water streams , Due to the increasing demand of activated carbon, there is a strong need for sorting out new precursors for its preparation which should be cost effective at par with the commercially available activated carbon. Although a variety of raw materials were explored for the preparation of activated carbon in earlier studies, scientists are still trying to explore new materials depending on their availability and suitability. The aim of the preparation of activated carbon from renewable energy because it’s affordable, an eco-friendly manner for various applications. Activated carbon can be produced from a wealth of different raw materials. However, the utilization of agricultural waste as a raw material for the preparation of activated carbon has increased notably in recent years. Activated carbon is a black solid substance resembling granular or powdered charcoal. Activated carbons have high porosity; high surface area manufactured by carbonization and activation of carbonaceous materials. There are two processes for preparation of activated carbon: chemical & physical activation.

- ItemChilean TRC: Truth-Telling and Gaining Democracy(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Ala'a Ahmad Mohammad Abhari; Zlata BozacIn 1990 a truth and reconciliation commission (TRC) was established after the military dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet’s regime between the period (1973-1990), where human rights were violated, and many victims struggled during the regime. After that dictatorial regime ended, there was democratic elections which made the new president at that time: Patricio Aylwin establish the TRC, and it was named the Rettig after its chairman; just six weeks after his inauguration as the new Chilean president, who made it clear that his prominent goal is to investigate human rights violations during the past through this TRC. As reported by Brahms, the Rettig had many aims, and the most crucial were: investigating gross human rights violations that occurred during the 17-years-long dictatorship, exploring the cases in which the victims were killed or disappeared, prosecute the perpetrators, and prevent the repetition of human rights abuses, and recommend reparations. This paper will explore the methods in which the Rettig investigated the cases during the military dictatorship, and will investigate some important concepts that challenged the TRC’s job or were interconnected with, and the outcomes and reparations of the TRC, which will help us in understanding the dramatic transition into democracy after the dictatorship in 1990. Therefore, the research question that will be examined in this research is: what were the utilized methods of investigation by the Chilean TRC and were they effective?

- ItemThe Use of Thoracic Segmental Spinal Anesthesia for a Thoracoscopic Diaphragmatic Hernia Repair in an Adult with Cardiac Compromise(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Mahmoud Manasra; Omar Height; Rahaf Adwan; Mohammed MaraqaMorgagni hernia repair is commonly performed under general anesthesia (GA). While general anesthesia is becoming more and safer, there are still some dangers and problems; nevertheless, neuraxial anesthesia also has its risks and contraindications. The most frequent problems with general anesthesia are respiratory and cardiovascular in nature. Under GA, there is a chance of myocardial infarction, disruption of lung mechanics, and aggravation of preexisting comorbidities. Thoracic segmental spinal synesthesia (TSSA) is a type of regional anesthesia that could serve as an effective alternative to general anesthesia in patients who have contraindications for GA. This neuraxial anesthesia technique is especially useful for individuals receiving general anesthesia who are deemed to be at high risk (e.g., old age). Improved patient safety, a shorter length of stay in the post-anesthesia care unit, and better postoperative pain control are some benefits of using thoracic spinal anesthesia for these routine operations. For a number of surgical procedures, such as laparoscopic cholecystectomies, breast cancer lumpectomies, and abdominal cancer surgery, thoracic spinal anesthesia has been shown in the literature to be a safe and reliable technique. As far as we know, we provide the first documented instance of laparoscopic repair of an acquired Morgagni hernia using TSSA in an 80-year-old woman with HFrEF and other comorbidities.

- ItemDetection of Acute Stroke Using the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS)(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Hala Ahmad Othman Khateeb; Haneen Mohammad Terawi; Wafaa Shwiky; Nagham Salman; Alaa Abutair; Assel Natsheh; Ala' ThawabtehIn 2022, cerebral strokes ranked fourth as the leading cause of death in the Palestinian Ministry of Health, accounting for 11% of all deaths. The Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) is a quick, semi-quantitative way to assess ischemic lesions and predict prognosis in patients with ischemic stroke. It is a straightforward, reliable method for evaluating early ischemic changes in the blood supply region of the middle and posterior cerebral arteries. The primary basis for this strategy is the visual observation of doctors. However, the low inter-reader agreement could lead to mistakes in the final diagnosis because of the doctor's varying degrees of experience. To aid medical professionals in their diagnosis and assessment, this work proposes the use of non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) as the basis for the ASPECTS technique of acute ischemic stroke.
