- ItemChilean TRC: Truth-Telling and Gaining Democracy(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Ala'a Ahmad Mohammad Abhari; Zlata BozacIn 1990 a truth and reconciliation commission (TRC) was established after the military dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet’s regime between the period (1973-1990), where human rights were violated, and many victims struggled during the regime. After that dictatorial regime ended, there was democratic elections which made the new president at that time: Patricio Aylwin establish the TRC, and it was named the Rettig after its chairman; just six weeks after his inauguration as the new Chilean president, who made it clear that his prominent goal is to investigate human rights violations during the past through this TRC. As reported by Brahms, the Rettig had many aims, and the most crucial were: investigating gross human rights violations that occurred during the 17-years-long dictatorship, exploring the cases in which the victims were killed or disappeared, prosecute the perpetrators, and prevent the repetition of human rights abuses, and recommend reparations. This paper will explore the methods in which the Rettig investigated the cases during the military dictatorship, and will investigate some important concepts that challenged the TRC’s job or were interconnected with, and the outcomes and reparations of the TRC, which will help us in understanding the dramatic transition into democracy after the dictatorship in 1990. Therefore, the research question that will be examined in this research is: what were the utilized methods of investigation by the Chilean TRC and were they effective?

Women are about three times more likely than men to experience migraines, especially women between the ages of 15 and 55.
- ItemDetection of Acute Stroke Using the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS)(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Hala Ahmad Othman Khateeb; Haneen Mohammad Terawi; Wafaa Shwiky; Nagham Salman; Alaa Abutair; Assel Natsheh; Ala' ThawabtehIn 2022, cerebral strokes ranked fourth as the leading cause of death in the Palestinian Ministry of Health, accounting for 11% of all deaths. The Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) is a quick, semi-quantitative way to assess ischemic lesions and predict prognosis in patients with ischemic stroke. It is a straightforward, reliable method for evaluating early ischemic changes in the blood supply region of the middle and posterior cerebral arteries. The primary basis for this strategy is the visual observation of doctors. However, the low inter-reader agreement could lead to mistakes in the final diagnosis because of the doctor's varying degrees of experience. To aid medical professionals in their diagnosis and assessment, this work proposes the use of non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) as the basis for the ASPECTS technique of acute ischemic stroke.
- ItemEvaluation of Antibiotic Therapy and Clinical Outcomes for Community-acquired Pneumonia in Hospitalized Adults: A prospective cohort study in Palestine(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Haneen Mahmoud Nimer Habes; Samah Abuajamiah; Ghaidaa Manasrah; Mariam Brbarawi; Israa Sharabati; Baraa.M.Ayesh; Yousef M. HabesCommunity-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is considered as the most common infectious cause of death and the second most common cause of hospitalization in the United States. CAP is a major cause of antibiotics prescription and hospitalization worldwide, so rational prescribing of antibiotics needs to be paid attention. Data describing the actual management and effectiveness of several classes of antibiotics in treating CAP patients in Palestine are limited.
- ItemExploring the Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Treatment and Prevention of Flu(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Ahmad Ibrahim; Abdallah Zamareh; Naseem Hamdan; Dala DaraghmehComplementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) could be a viable option in treating influenza pandemics, especially as stockpiling antivirals can be expensive and developing effective vaccines for influenza is challenging due to frequent changes in virus antigenic structures, making it difficult for ongoing research. CAM practices and remedies are a promising and affordable option that prioritizes a holistic approach to health. Although the effectiveness of CAM can differ, their use is increasing globally. However, there is a lack of research on how CAM is used for influenza prevention and treatment among Palestinians.
- ItemFood Hygiene Practices in Food Restaurants(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Shereen Adeb Hroub; Enas Zaher Hroub; Wesam Mahmoud SammarFood safety is a system that encompasses the handling, preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent the transmission of contaminants. This is achieved through a series of routine procedures aimed at averting health risks and to avoid food spoilage. Food spoilage can lead to food poisoning, which is a common condition resulting from the consumption of contaminated food. Shawarma (cooked meat) also called shawarma, shawerma, and Kebab is one of the common fast-food meals consumed by most people. However, this meal may cause a health risk to the consumer due to its potential to contain harmful microorganisms, this is often a result of inadequate cooking processes and general hygiene practices.
- ItemIdentification of Toxoplasma Gondii Epitopes Using Phage Display Libraries for Serodiagnostic Purposes(Deanship of Research/ Al-Quds University, 2024-04-01) Deena Sayes; Ibrahim AbbasiToxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii that can infect humans and animals. Currently, the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis can be performed through various methods, including serological and molecular methods. However, while molecular methods are highly sensitive and specific, they require highly specialized laboratory equipment and high BSL (biosafety levels), which may not be readily available in many settings. Moreover, molecular methods require the use of genetic material, which can pose a risk of infection for laboratory personnel. On the other hand, serological methods are more accessible and affordable, and they can detect the presence of antibodies against T. gondii, which indicates a past or current infection. Additionally, serological methods can identify specific T. gondii antigens or epitopes, which can be used to develop diagnostic tools without the need for live parasites. Thus, there is a need to explore the potential of serological methods for the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis and their potential applications in the development of safer and easier diagnostic tools. The identification of specific epitopes using phage display libraries can improve the specificity and sensitivity of diagnostic assays for T. gondii infection in cats and humans. Objectives: the research aims to identify specific epitopes that can be used in the diagnosis of Toxoplasma gondii infection using M13 phage display libraries, and then to analyze the sequences of the isolated phages using next generation DNA sequencing and bioinformatics tools.
