Abstract
This study aimed to investigate mathematical modelling and its relationship with social mathematics and geometric thinking among 10th grade students in Tulkarm Governorate in light of the variables of students’ gender, mathematics achievement, and place of residence. The researcher adopted the descriptive correlational approach due to its suitability for achieving the purposes of the study. The study population consisted of (3,320) students, whereas the study sample comprised (329) students, including (154) males and (175) females. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher developed the study instruments, namely: a Mathematical Modelling Test, a Social Mathematics Skills Checklist, and a Geometric Thinking Test. The validity and reliability of these instruments were established using appropriate procedures. The results revealed that the level of mathematical modelling among 10th grade students was high, with a mean score of (14). The findings also indicated statistically significant differences in mathematical modelling attributable to gender in favor of females, place of residence in favor of students living in urban areas, and mathematics achievement in favor of students with high achievement (above 80). The findings further showed that the level of social mathematics skills among 10th grade students was moderate, with a mean score of (0.59). Statistically significant differences were found in social mathematics skills attributable to gender in favor of males, place of residence in favor of students living in rural areas, and mathematics achievement in favor of students with low achievement (below 70). In addition, the results indicated that the level of geometric thinking among 10th grade students was moderate, with a mean score of (15.45). Statistically significant differences were found in geometric thinking attributable to gender in favor of females, place of residence in favor of students living in urban areas, and mathematics achievement in favor of students with high achievement (above 80). Moreover, the results showed a moderate negative correlation between mathematical modelling and social mathematics, a moderate positive correlation between mathematical modelling and geometric thinking, and a weak negative correlation between social mathematics and geometric thinking. In light of these findings, the researcher recommended emphasizing the integration of mathematical modelling into mathematics instruction and linking it to various social and real-life situations to enhance geometric thinking. The study also recommended developing mathematics curricula and instructional methods to improve students’ social mathematics skills and geometric thinking through the use of appropriate educational technologies and modern teaching strategies. Furthermore, it recommended enhancing teachers’ competencies through training programs that support the integrated teaching of mathematical modelling, social mathematics, and geometric thinking within educational settings.
