Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the level of literary literacy and its relation to
attitudes towards reading among first- secondary grade students in Hebron district, the
researcher studied also the effect of the variables gender, Directorate and stream on this
literacy. The population of the study consisted of all male and female students in the
first secondary grade in Hebron district, (N=10855) in the academic year (2012-2013),
and the sample of the study consisted of (543) students .
For achieving the purpose of the study two instruments have been constructed: a test of
literary literacy consisted of (40) multiple choice items and a questionnaire to measure
students attitudes towards reading, consisted of (34) items. validity and reliability of
both instruments were established.
The study revealed the following results:-
The level of literary literacy among students in first -secondary grade in Hebron district
was moderately and closely low. There were significant differences in literary literacy
due to Directorate in favor of (South, middle), and due to gender in favor of female,
and due to streasm in favor to scientific stream.
The results also show that the attitudes towards reading among students in the first
secondary grade in Hebron district were moderate. There were significant differences

According to these results, the study recommended the following :-
Workshops and courses for teachers to help them how to give their students the
elements of literacy, and to help the students to develop positive attitudes towards
reading.
