Abstract
The purpose of the study is to identify the effectiveness of a preventive training program in improving the awareness of sexual education among students with mild intellectual disabilities in the Bethlehem Governorate. The study adopted the experimental approach for one group as it’s suitable for the purposes of the study. The study population consists of students with mild disabilities in the Bethlehem governorate, and the sample of the study was (24) students, (12 females, 12 males), aged ranged between 10-16 years with a mild intellectual disability in Yamima Association in Beit Jala. They were diagnosed by experts and specialists in the field of special education. An awareness test for sexual education was built was created to achieve the objectives of this study. The test was verified in terms of its validity and reliability. The test was applied on the students before and after the program to measure the improvement of their sexual awareness. The program included 9 sessions, each session lasted for 50 minutes with short breaks. The statistical method was used to calculate the percentages and arithmetic averages for students. The results showed the effectiveness of the preventive training program in improving the awareness of sexual education among students with mild intellectual disabilities in Bethlehem Governorate, but the level of awareness differed based on gender in favor of females. Accordingly, the study recommended the need to work on including the proposed preventive training program for the students, and to work on developing it to ensure an appropriate and strong sexual education for children with mild, moderate and severe intellectual disabilities. In addition to the need to circulate the program and its results to the various institutions working on the field of education and care with children with mild intellectual disabilities, in order to promote sexual education for these children in various geographical areas in the West Bank. Also, the study stressed on the need to work on developing sexual awareness programs for children with intellectual disabilities through parents and relatives in order to continue the process of awareness at home, to ensure to the integration of sexual education for children in both institution and homes.
