| dc.description.abstract | This study aimed to identify the personality traits and psychological and social factors of addiction, recovery, and relapse among drug addicts - a qualitative case study. The study sample consisted of drug addicts and those who recovered from it. Therefore, the sample included three relapsed addicts males at Bethlehem Psychiatric Hospital and three males of recovering drug users from the Bethlehem community. The study reached several results, the most important of which was that neuroticism and aggression were the two most prevalent traits among addicts and relapsers. They obtained average to high degrees in them according to the Eysenck Personality Test. In contrast, the results of recovered individuals for these two traits were from medium to low. Also, psychotic traits appeared with high levels among the addicts and the relapsed, while the extraversion characteristics were low. However, these traits appeared from medium to high among the recovered. The results of the study also showed that addicts and relapses have a clear and high psychopathic deviation in their personality according to the Minnesota Multifaceted Test. In contrast, the results among the recovered were law and unnoticeable according to the psychological profile as it can't be measured with Minnesota Multifaceted Test. The study found the most important subjective psychological factors that drive individuals to abuse and addiction, which are "escape from reality and psychological pressures" and "love of experience and curiosity towards drugs”, in addition to "psychological trauma, which was represented in prison, emotional failure and sexual assault". It also showed the essential family psychological factors behind drug addiction, which are "excess cruelty, neglect, lack of attention and family care," "family violence represented by beating mother and children," "disagreements among the parents and family instability,". In addition, it revealed the social factors that pushed drug addiction, like "the availability and ease of access to drugs" and the presence of drug mates". Moreover, the results of the study showed the subjective psychological factors for treatment and recovery from drug addiction, which are "self-actualization based on the individual's desires and tendencies,” "guilt and remorse towards oneself and one's family," and "learning from experience". There are also family psychological factors for treatment and recovery from drug addiction, which are "support of family members to get rid of drugs," "partner's support and emotional stability". It also showed the social factors that helped recovery and treatment of drug addiction, which are "Going to a health center for drug treatment and following an integrated treatment program," and "learning skills to face life stresses through the treatment program". Finally, the results of the study revealed the subjective psychological factors behind the relapse, which are "craving for the drug" and "the inability to cope with life's pressures". Also, family psychological factors such as "lack of family support, containment, and care" and "permanent family disputes”.
