Abstract
This study aims at examining the nominal word ( ma) , trying to
point out its forms , features and functions and emphasizing the
denotation of each form in the verses of the Quran through providing
some examples which represent the whole picture the research intends to
present. It is difficult to handle the whole numerous nominal forms of
( ma) in the holy Quran, since it needs many studies like this one to fulfill
all its forms.
Through all the ages grammarians have studied the nominal (ma)
and have pointed the places where it is mentioned in the holy Quran and
Arabic poetry.
The research has adopted a statistical and descriptive approach. It
has identified and enumerated the verses in which the various forms of
the nominal (ma) occur : ( interrogative, conditional, relative and
indefinite).
The thesis has four chapters, as well as an introduction, a
conclusion and some appendices. The first chapter gives some details
about the interrogative (ma) as regards the concept of interrogation and
how the grammarians handle it. The second chapter deals with the
conditional (ma) both as temporal and non- temporal. The third chapter
treats the relative (ma) also relativization is explained, and the deletion of
both the pronoun in relative sentences (Al- A’id) and the nominal
relative. In the fourth chapter the indefinite (ma), both (the described) and
the (non- described), is handled.
Every chapter is concluded with some examples and
comprehensive pointers as for the denotation of the nominal (ma) in the
holy Quran.
The chapters are followed with some statistical tables identifying
the verses in which the various types of the nominal (ma) occur in the
Quran.
The study introduces a number of results and findings at which the
research has arrived. Some of the main results are the nominal (ma) is
found in One thousand two hundred ninety nine verses of the Quran. Also
it is found that the absolute interrogative (ma) is found in one hundred
verses of the Quran, while the interrogative (ma) which is proceeded by
the traction letters is found in twenty five verses of the Quran, other types
of interrogative (ma) is found in twenty one verses of the Quran, which
makes the sum of all verses, where interrogative (ma) in all types is
found, one hundred twenty seven verses. It is also concluded that the
conditional (ma) is found in thirty three verses on the Quran. On the other
hand the relative (ma) is found in one thousand fifty five verses, it is
found that two hundred twenty six verses contains both conditional (ma)
and provenance (ma), while only twelve verses contains both conditional
(ma) and indefinite (ma). That makes the sum of verses containing
conditional (ma) in all its forms one thousand two hundred seventy three
verses which makes the conditional (ma) the most mentioned type in the
Quran. Finally the indefinite (ma) is only found in eighteen verses of the
