Due to the importance of media in our daily lives and the effect it has on us individuals and
groups, this research focuses on the Israeli press being the most prevalent and influential in
Israeli society, and aims to identify how the Israeli press covered the first week of the war
on Gaza in the year 2008, and the extent of freedom the press has, and to clarify the size of
the discrepancy between the three Israeli newspapers (Yediot Ahronot, Maariv, Haaretz)
and that was clear through the method adopted by the Israeli press in covering the war on
Gaza enhance and reinforce the solidity and cohesion of Israeli democracy, How much
freedom did the Israeli press in covering the war on Gaza, how the Israeli press its
mandated role to influence the public opinion in favor of the public, and whwther the
Israeli press apply ethical and professional principles generally accepted in delivering the
truth to the public, also if there is a difference and competition between the Israeli
newspapers on the speed and the fact news.
The researcher depended in his study upon two approaches, first is the historical
approach, by reviewing of the literature, second, a content analysis of a major news
published in the three leading Israeli newspapers (Yediot Ahronot, Maariv, Haaretz) during
the first week of war, as the researcher reviewed the three newspapers issued from
December 28, 2008 untill January 2, 2009, and has built this study on content analysis of
media material to reach a practical and realistic results at the end of the search.
This study also came to offer the reader a picture of the media coverage adopted by
the Israeli press as a method and approach during the war on Gaza, this study relied on
several chapters and sections arranged overlap sometimes and sometimes independence,
chapter one is based on the introduction, chapter two is based on Conceptual framework,
chapter three came in three sections focuses on the origins and evolution of the Israeli
press and the relationship of the press with the authorities, finally, freedom of the press and
the law, section four is about taking a sample headline from three Israeli newspapers
during the war on Gaza and analyzing it, and section five is about the conclusions reached
by the study. The researcher found that Israel in times of crisis is not Israel in normal times, where complete democracy in the quiet times and complete dictatorship in wartimes,
where the media plays a role similar to the land, air and sea weapons, and the military
spokesman has a prominent role in deciding what to publish and what not to publish to the
public.
The researcher concluded that the difference between the three newspapers in
covering the first week of the war on Gaza is not clear, where the three newspapers
appeared similar in content and different in the form of news presentation, and supported
the military institution and provided all the support in accordance with the principle of
national interest, and over the months leading up to the war on Gaza the Israeli press
ignored the existence of Israel as an occupying power, and ignored the land, sea, and air
siege imposed by Israel on Gaza, focusing on the rockets fired from Gaza on broken glass
pane in an Israeli settlement more than focusing on the death of dozens of patients due to
the siege imposed by the Israeli occupation.
