Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to identify death anxiety among widowed senior in
refugee camps in Northern district of the West Bank. Also, it aimed to
identify its relation with the factors of educational level, the level of religious
commitment, health and living condition, age and time of loose.
Method: For achieving the study's purpose, a scale consisting of (20) items
and four domains has been developed, distributed among (228) individuals of
study sample in five refugee camps. The questionnaires were gathered,
codified, entered the computer and statistically processed by using the
statistical package of social science (SPSS).
Results: The study results on the targeted sample show a low degree of
response on the domain of death anxiety on the items of fear from death and
graves, fear from after death, fear from fatal diseases and fear from the idea of
death. A moderate response degree has been found on the second domain on
the items of "I fear grave punishment and I'm thinking about beyond death",
low degree of response on the third and fourth domains except for the item of
"I fear cancer".
The results of the qualitative study have indicated that death bears
contradictive meanings, positive and negatives. Some of them think that death
is a mercy (90%), question and punishment (100%). The majority of the
tested sample expressed medium level fear. Meanwhile, (23%) expressed a
low degree of fear and (15%) had a high level fear of death.
Moreover, the results show that there were differences on the effect of the
experience on the tested sample due to their age group. It showed that deathexperienced in childhood affected their way of thinking in a different way of
their current life after they became senior; the majority of them (64%) feel an
increasing level of death anxiety when they feel sick or have a disease. Also,
the tested sample expressed that their full awareness for death is based on
their religious beliefs through which they seek the best comment to thespiritual and religious commands so they can avoid the grave or the hereafter
life punishment.
Recommendations: The researcher has come up with a group of
recommendation to both decision makers and specialists.
