Abstract
This study aimed to identify the extent rate of social phobia among the students of the tenth and eleventh grades in Jerusalem and its suburbs. It was examined in the academic year of 2020/2021 on (1153) male and female students of the tenth and eleventh grade of the schools of Jerusalem and its suburbs (private and public schools that belong to the Palestinian Authority). The study used the descriptive approach: Cross Sectional study, and the Social Phobia Inventory prepared by Connor et al. 2000. The researcher translated the research into Arabic and codified it for its validity and reliability.
The study’s results showed that the prevalence of social phobia symptoms among students of the tenth and eleventh grades in Jerusalem’s schools and its suburbs reached )24.5%(, which is considered high. The prevalence of severe social phobia was )2.2%(, )22.3%( for moderate social phobia, and )75.5%( were without social phobia.
Also, the results of the study showed no statistically significant relationship between the prevalence of social phobia symptoms among tenth and eleventh grade students in Jerusalem’s schools and its suburbs and the variables (age, grade, school, place of residence, number of brothers and sisters), while there are differences of the prevalence of social phobia symptoms among students of the tenth and eleventh grades in Jerusalem and its suburbs and variables (gender, parents’ monthly income, and parents’ marital status).
The differences were in favor of females for the variable of sex, and the differences in the parents' monthly income were between (below 2500 NIS) and (5000 NIS and above) in favor of people who gain below 2500 NIS, and (2500-5000 NIS) and (5000 NIS and above) in favor of people (2500 NIS). -5000 shekels), and with regard to the parent marital status, the differences between (divorced) and (married) were in favor of (divorced), and between (one of the parents is dead) and (married) in favor of one of the parents is dead.
The regression analysis was done to check the relationship between independent variables (sex, parents’ monthly income, place of residence, parents’ marital status) and prevalence of social phobia symptoms among young students the tenth and eleventh in Jerusalem and its suburbs. The result found that these variables together have an effect on the dependent variable (the prevalence of social phobia symptoms among students of the tenth and eleventh grades in Jerusalem and its suburbs). It was found that there was a positive effect of the variables (sex, school type, place of residence) and an adverse effect of the variable (monthly income of parents).
That is, the more we turn to females and private schools, and the lower monthly income of the parents, this increases prevalence of social phobia symptoms among young students the tenth and eleventh in Jerusalem and its suburbs.
Based on the study’s results, the researcher recommended that there is a need to pay attention to students who show symptoms of social phobia – by the teachers and school psychologists, and to refer them for appropriate intervention and treatment.
Also, there is a need to work on educate families, especially parents, about the importance of non-discrimination between males and females, and the importance
of equality of treatment between children, through conducting awareness workshops.
