Abstract
The study aims to assess the reality of media literacy in the educational institutions in Palestine by using schools as a model. The minor objectives of the study include: demonstrating students' knowledge, follow-up, and awareness in dealing with the various media platforms; assessing the role of educational institutions (schools) in the development of students' media and information literacy from the students' perspectives; identifying students' ability to use media in everyday life as well as to produce and share meaningful media content; demonstrating significant differences in the respondents’ responses on the reality of media and information literacy in the educational institutions due to certain demographic variables (gender, age, type of school, location of residence). The researcher used the analytical, descriptive approach in the study. The questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. The target population consisted of school students aged 12-18 in Ramallah and Al-Bireh. The study sample was selected using the random sampling method. The sample size was four hundred individuals out of the research community . The results of the study showed that the overall score of media and information literacy among school students in Ramallah and Al-Bireh governorate was high. The items "Awareness and Analysis" and "Role of the school in media and information literacy" also rendered high scores. The score of the third item, "Digital engagement and interaction," was moderate. The research's outcome demonstrated school students’ ability to analyze information and news, and to further distinguish between positive and negative media content from different sources. Students were keen to research news and information's authenticity and source reliability. Moreover, the findings indicated that students fear lack of privacy in media and lack confidence in absolute freedoms and freedom of expression. Students' creativity and participation in public life in media was hindered by a fear of prosecution due to sensitive posts. The study concluded that the concept of information and media literacy, including its comprehensive sense, elements, and components, was still in its early stages. Although media literacy has recently extended throughout Palestinian schools, it has not yet overcome the challenges of the current era. The modern technological era has been both complex and rapidly changing due to the complicated advancement, abundance of available digital media outlets, multiplicity of social media channels ,rapid transmission of a huge amount of information, and the spread of new and electronic media as one of the most important media tools among students. The necessity of exchanging experiences and expanding the scope of coordination and partnership between the relevant parties; Giving specialized courses for teachers in schools, The research shows the need to carry out further research on media and information literacy, particularly assessing the main elements of the educational process (school, teacher, student, curriculum, family, parents, and educational family). In addition, evaluating the reality, goals, objectives, skills, and other aspects of media and information literacy is essential to develop a specific national strategy for the future of media and information literacy
