Abstract
This thesis examines the semiotics of the Palestinian caricature that concerns the case of the assassination of journalist Sherin Abu Aqla, by analyzing the caricature images in Palestinian and international newspapers, and researching the mechanisms of operation of the semiotic dimensions by employing the iconic, constructive, and linguistic dimensions, in order to answer the main question: How did newspapers employ Palestinian and international semiotics in the service of caricature in the case of the assassination of journalist Sherin Abu Aqla? The researcher assumed that there is a negative impact of religious traditions on cartooning, and that gatekeepers, partisanship, and editorial policies negatively affect cartooning. The semiological approach was used as the main approach, as well as the content analysis tool to collect data, and applying this to a comprehensive purposive sample of the two newspapers, "Filastin", published in Gaza, and Al-Quds Al-Arabi, published in London. The sample within the newspapers was a comprehensive, representative sample. The sample covers all published cartoons related to the case of the assassination of journalist Sherin Abu Aqla, during the period 12/5/2022 AD to 24/5/2022 AD, and the researcher came up with many results, most notably: the necessity of using the Hebrew language in drawings, as the painter Muhammad Sabaaneh did in one of his drawings, and because daily newspapers have websites that can make the Israeli public a target audience for their drawings, and the necessity not to incorporate religious and partisan ideological norms into caricatures dealing with national issues such as the case of the assassination of Sherin Abu Aqla, and designating a course that covers the subject of semiotics to be taught in the arts faculties in Palestinian universities.
