Abstract
This study aims at: identifying the reality and the constraints of professional development of faculty members of community and university colleges in the West Bank and Jerusalem. It also describes the effect of study variables on professional development of faculty members and constraints that impede that development.
The researcher used the descriptive method. The study sample consisted of 79 full-time faculty members selected by stratified method. The sample compromised almost of 32% of the study population that consisted of 241 full-time faculty members in 2018-2019.
To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher developed a tool (questionnaire) centered on two main points: the first measures five fields of professional development, namely: teaching, scientific research, community service, educational technologies, and leading and administrative fields. The second measures the extent of professional development constraints. The validity of the tool of the study has been verified by appropriate educational and statistical approaches.
The study concluded that the degree of professional development of faculty members of community and university colleges, and the constraints that stand in the way of that development has been average. The arithmetic mean of professional development has been 3.34, and the standard deviation 0.636, whereas the arithmetic mean of constraints has been 3.03, and the standard deviation 0.676. As regards the effect of the above-mentioned variables on professional development and its constraints, there have been no differences at the statistical significance 0.05≥α attributed to those variables.
In the light of the above conclusions, the researcher recommends that educational burdens on faculty members be reduced, so that they can develop their capacities; that laws and legislations be enacted to enhance their motivation; that all potentials be made available to encourage them to participate in community activities; that their researches, studies, capacity building and scientific researches be motivated and financed; and that centers and facilities be established and followed up to upgrade development at colleges generally and professional development particularly.
