Abstract
Parenting experiences that involve interaction between parents and children on a daily and recurring basis are an opportunity for psychological development for both parents and children; The suffering of fathers or mothers with symptoms of psychotic disorders affects this interaction and the family as a whole (Gubta and Jones, 2014). This study aimed to describe the parenting experiences of mothers and fathers with psychotic disorders, and to study the nature of the relationship between psychotic symptoms and parenting experiences and associated factors. The study was carried out in the mental health clinics of the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the West Bank. It was implemented in three governorates: Jerusalem, Ramallah, and Bethlehem. The researcher used the qualitative approach in this study, and the semi-structured interview was the application tool. The study sample was 15 participants who had psychotic symptoms as a result of schizophrenia, psychotic depression or bipolar, and all participants had children under the age of 18 years, and they were selected intentionally. The results of the study showed that psychotic patients who follow up in mental health clinics in the West Bank have parenting experiences that are affected by the symptoms of psychotic disorders and the effects associated with them, whether they are short-term or long-term. The challenges associated with parenting for psychotic patients through upbringing practices and issues related to their children contribute to increasing psychological pressures and limit psychological stability. The sources of support and challenges for patients with psychosis, from experiences of treatment and social interaction with the partner, extended family, and the surrounding community, have a significant impact in determining the nature of parenting experiences for the patient. The study summarized the importance of parenting experiences for psychotic patients, which requires developing life and parenting skills for psychotic patients, and educating them and their families about coping methods and dealing with the effects of psychotic symptoms
