Abstract
This study aimed at identifying the effectiveness of a Picture-Exchange Based Program PECS in development of life skills for children with autism spectrum disorder in Hebron governorate. The researcher used the experimental methodology and followed the design of the one group. The study sample consisted of six male children with autism spectrum disorder. The degree of autism ranged between (simple and medium) for the age group between (4-11) years, and the participants were intentionally chosen from the Khurma Center for Autistic Children. The researcher has prepared the following tools: a verified and validated life skills questionnaire for children with autism spectrum, a case study form, baby favorite booster form, in addition to designing the PECS bag. The study reached the following results: the effectiveness of a PECS-based program in developing life skills for children with autism spectrum disorder in Hebron governorate. Moreover, there are statistically significant differences at (α ≥ 0.05) in the mean scores for children with autism spectrum disorder scores in the communication skills questionnaire between the pre and post measurement in favor of post measurement. Similarly, there are statistically significant differences at (α ≥ 0.05) in the mean scores for children with autism disorder in the cognitive skills questionnaire between the pre and post measurement in favor of post measurement; finally, there are statistically significant differences at (α ≥ 0.05) in the mean scores for children with autism disorder scores in the everyday life skills questionnaire between the pre and post measurement in favor of post measurement. These results also indicated an increase in the eye contact time in children with autism spectrum disorder, an increase in their language inventory and the ability to pronounce words clearly, an improvement in their ability to distinguish between things they like and things they dislike, in addition to the use of the pronoun (I) and the symbol (I want, hear, see) to express their needs and desires. Moreover, the development of the ability of children with autism spectrum disorder to request things using pictures automatically within the cognitive skill and everyday like skills groups, increasing their ability to form sentences and answer the following questions: (What do you want?, What do you hear?, What do you see?). In light of the results, the researcher recommends the necessity of involving families in educational programs for autistic children so that these programs can be effective in providing children with the necessary skills. conducting more studies regarding the use of PECS program in the development of other skills and on other categories of special education.
