Abstract
This study aimed to identify the self concept and its relation by the use of
psychological defense mechanism and the range of its affectation with the demographic
variables : sex, academic specialization, scholastic year as well as the study rate for
AlQuds University .The study problem is specified in answering the main question of the
study :What is the degree of self concept and its relation by using psychological defense
mechanism for AlQuds University student in Palestine ?In order to checkup this ,the
researcher conducted his study based on the descriptive approach on a random sample
consisted of (433) students from AlQuds University ,by using Tensse Measurement for the
self concept and the Defence Mechanism Measurement .The study achieved the following
results :
The total degree for the self concept for the students was high ,there were also
statically significance differences in the total degree for each of the sex variable for
females and the study rate variable was in the interest of the students whose averages are
( 70%- 85%).But the other variables : specialization and the scholastic year , the null
hypothesis was accepted in the absence of the statistical significance variable for the total
degree of the variables in the self concept degree .
The degree of using the defense mechanism by students was medium .There were
statistical significance differences for the dimension of the change mechanism against
others for the benefit of the females, and the dimension of the projection mechanism for
the benefit of the students whose averages are (70- 85%) and the reversal for the benefit of
the second year students .But for the dimensions of defence mechanism there were no
variables of statically significance for the study variables .
It is cleared from the study that there is a positive relation between the different
dimensions of the self concept, whereas the results showed a negative relation between the
various dimensions of the self concept and the rest of psychological self mechanism.
And on the bases of the results of this study and there discussion a number of
recommendations were made by the researcher and here the most important ones :working
towards the creation of centers for psychological counseling within the university domain
,and conducting more similar studies about the psychological defense mechanism in its
relation with various personal variables .
