Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of disinformation used in digital media
that affect perception formation. In addition, it aimed to identify the forms of
disinformation utilized to reshape perception and awareness systematically and
intentionally among users of digital media, particularly in media institutions that appear
credible and trustworthy to the public. Also, it aimed to define the mechanisms of
disinformation used in digital news media and to analyze Quds News Network as an
applied model. Moreover, it sought to exploring the media discourse and determining the
disinformation strategies.
The study utilized the medium theory and a model that combines Norman Fairclough's
classical, social discourse analysis, acting forces analysis technique, image semiotics
analysis, Pierre Papin's dramatization, arguments of Michel Foucault, Regis Debray, and
Aristotle's Persuasive Triangle. All of which was used to reveal the implications and
disinformation strategies of Quds News and its role in shaping user perception.
To answer the research question, which is "To what extent are the mechanisms of
disinformation employed by the Quds News Network for digital media to influence the
formation of perceptions among the masses?" the researcher used the descriptive-analytical
approach and the inductive and deductive approaches. Also, the researcher utilized the
discourse analysis tool to obtain qualitative data and the Python programming language to
get quantitative data that comprehensively describe the phenomenon addressed by the
study. Then, the publications were analyzed in interconnected clusters, especially for topics
related to normalization between Arabs and Israel, to test the hypothesis, which states that
و
the Quds Network practices a perceptual misleading to influence the ideological structure
of the masses in the virtual world.
The study results showed that Quds News Network had published posts regarding the
normalization between Arabs and Israel twice as much as all three other studied Palestinian
media news platforms combined. Furthermore, it increased its publications about the topic
by 40% after signing the Normalization Agreement between the United Arab Emirates and
Israel. In addition, the network has utilized the rhetoric discursive ideological approach in
the social context mixed with techniques of theatrical performance. The visual content was
strongly presented and formed a hyper communicative palette that acted as a parallel stage
for lingual-lexical discourse and audio-visual discourse. A paradox was created between
linguistic reality and historical reality by evoking the iconic dimensions in images and
words in conflict and contrast in contexts, actors, and exchanging roles. The consumers'
comments on photos mainly emphasized and imposed a specific reception context for the
masses within a pre-planned ideological dimension that reproduced reality within the
ideological shaping paradigm among the residents of the info-sphere. The study results
support the research hypothesis; the utilization of misleading and dis-informing techniques
by Quds News Network to alter the perception of masses on normalization between Arabs
and Israel. The coverage operations were subjected to media production, borrowing from
reality the culture of theatrical performance in covering the news of the United Arab
Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco.
Thus, through redefining reality and media production operations, we can conclude that
Quds News Network works to mislead the recipient's perception in a clear setup of disinformation
phenomenon relying on the strength, power, invisibility and technological
inevitability of the technical medium.
