Abstract
The study aimed at identifying the impact of sustainable leadership in developing the performance of the international organizations based on the case study of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) operating in the South Governorate of the Gaza Strip in Palestine. The researcher applied the descriptive analytical approach and used the questionnaire to collect the data from the Purposive Sample and middle management staff at UNRWA. The comprehensive enumeration was used with 44 questionnaires received out of 50 questionnaires distributed (88%). Results were analyzed in the SPSS program. In-depth analysis pointed out : a high level of sustainable leadership practices present among the senior and middle management staff of UNRWA Field Office in South Governorate in Palestine (a relative weight of 69.0%), simultaneously accompanied with an equally high level of the organization’s performance development (a relative weight of 72.4%). there was a positive impact for leading others, social justice, and integration of the environmental and diversity aspects on the performance development at international organizations, no statistically significant differences were found between the average response about the sustainable leadership and the organization’s performance development depending on personal and organizational variables. The study concluded with a set of comprehensive recommendations : enrichment of relevant UNRWA policies and regulations to align and facilitate the implementation of the sustainable development; provide intensive training for preparing management leaders; development and promotion of the organizational and structural frameworks adapted to the requirements of sustainable leadership; enhance the active participation of all employees in the development of the strategic plans and decision-making processes; inclusion of the concept of sustainability within the organizational culture; enhancement of the training opportunities accordingly in order to properly prepare the organization’s leaders; delegation of the appropriate authority to the staff to enhance the local participation within the scope of competence; gender-specific empowerment of female staff including increased appointments for senior management roles with adequate decision-making responsibilities; provision of training courses and workshops for staff about the concept of the sustainable leadership and its benefits for the organization; development of working mechanisms to strengthen the partnership with stakeholders and other partner organizations and working on providing sustainable fundraising to support the core programs avoiding the continues budget deficit.
