RM12-17: Experimental tests of time-reversal invariance (TRI)

Scientific goals of the collaboration:
The ultimate scientific goal is to establish a direct verification of T-symmetry breaking – up to now TRI-violation has only been achieved indirectly (via electroweak CP-violation, assuming the CPT theorem). The motivation is the need for new additional T/CP-violation to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of our universe – the puzzle of our existence.
The TRI-tests comprise two projects:
- TRIC: precision study of a genuine T-violating null observable in double-polarized proton-deuteron scattering at COSY; experimentally the lifetime of a coasting beam in COSY will be measured and compared for two “time-reversed” scenarios.
- JEDI: a precursor EDM (electric dipole moment) experiment at COSY, using an rf-Wien filter to search for effect of an EDM on a stored horizontally polarized deuteron (proton) beam. EDMs of fundamental particles violate T- and P-(parity) symmetry, and have not been observed yet.
