The impact of social media and modern communication on political change in the Arab region, 2011-2014

dc.description.abstractThe role of new media and communication increased especially with regards to what it produced from social media in generating political changes in the Arab region, which caused the collapse of the heads of some regimes, and the rise of Islamic movements to power, and conducting elections in some countries, and various movements in other countries. All these political changes were caused by various factors including the growth of particular and general factors, but what contributed centrally in causing the peoples' uprisings was the social media, through mobilization, organization, and provocation. Social media networks have evolved after the events of Tunis in 2010, from areas to build friendships and social relations to tools that play an important political role calling for revolution and protest against oppression and authoritarianism, that are practiced by Arab regimes against their people, and as well it became the tools of activists whether political or legal. The old and new media and communication play important political roles besides the objectives that are taken care of like offering news, knowledge, education, entertainment, and fun. Those tools have passed through several stages of development so it can keep up with the technological advances. This study has shown the role played by the new media in generating political change after identifying its meaning and the factors affecting it through the years 2011-2014. This study allows through using the analytical and the descriptive methods for identifying the role that was played by the social networks in mobilizing the Arab peoples in their capital cities, and rural areas, to come out protesting and demanding change. The study shows the role of the political parties and their connection to reality, and their relation to the Arab youth, as well as its connection to the influence on the public opinion and political consciousness that contributes to change. The study concluded that the role of the new media and communication has been transformed into a significant and influential role with the collaboration of the information revolution together with the communication revolution, in the framework of the internet, especially that these means allow for reactivity that always was an objective of the Arab peoples. So after the case when the citizen was only the receiver of the information and the news, today the citizen is interactive in his or her relation to the information and he or her gives his or her opinion, and became a newsmaker and publisher through the new media. The study has shown that information and technological collaboration has provided new opportunities in the ability to mobilize, organize, and coordinate with the relevant sectors especially the youth. The social networks provided significant areas for the expression of the opinion of the opposition that is rejecting the imposed political reality, far from the tools of oppression and supervision by the state. The study recommends that the researchers and specialists to pay attention to the new media and the roles that it delivers and their consequences to all aspects of life whether social or political.en
