The study design employed by the researcher was cross sectional with a random representative sample of drug users (146). He also interviewed all services providers in the West Bank (12). The study showed that the characteristics of drug users were mainly uneducated, unemployed and married, with a significant number living with their spouses and children. The most cited causes for becoming drug users were the desire to overcome problems and feel relieved from society’s. Cannabis was the major drug sought by drug users and they cited Israeli occupation as the driving force. The study has also showed that service providers lacked any coordination amongst them as well as any clear strategy on how to combat the spread of drug use and which scientific approach to follow in treating drug users. The researcher made several recommendations chief amongst them clear policies and coherent strategies amonst service providers; develop standard protocols for service provision; train a cadre who is competent in addressing the problem; and the criminal justice need to impose harsher against drug promoters.
