Abstract
This study handled the description of animals in the poetic works of Ka'b Ibnu Zuhayr, as it reviewed both the thematic and technical aspects in his poetry. The researcher has chosen this topic to refer to the prominent status of animal importance in the Arabic poem in general and in Ka'b's poetry in particular. Ka'b Ibnu Zuhayr is regarded as one of the pioneers of the Aesthetic Verbal Poetry school who showed a great interest in the use of animal in, but the researcher couldn't find a separate study that investigates the description of animal in Ka'bs poetic works which made her follow the use of animal topic within his poetry to explore the hidden aspects of this topic. This study is important in the sense that it attempts to highlight how Ka'b significantly expressed his psychological frame of mind through the use of animals that he described in his poetic works. Moreover, this study is important in the sense that tackled the works of a poet who represented a stage of aesthetic verbal poetry school stages during the PreIslamic era. Moreover, this study is vital in the sense that it tackles such topic and follows it in Ka'b's works, especially that the topic of animal in poetry has never been investigated separately, although there were studies that had briefly handled this topic, among which: "Wolf in Ancient Literature" by Zakaria AnNotti, and "Poetry of Ka'b Ibnu Zuhayr, A Technical Study", a thesis by Mashhour Khaled Ar-Rawashdeh. In its presentation of the animal description, the study relied on a range of methodologies, namely are: historical methodology that discussed the poet's life and culture, psychological methodology that traced how he expressed his psychological frame of mind by using animal description and the aesthetic methodology to trace the technical components his poetic works, which are: lexicon of Ka'b and significance aspects, poetic image, symbol, characterization and rhythm. The study concluded that Ka'b had been influenced by his antecedent poets who used the animal especially those of the same school, and influenced later poets like At-Tarmah and Thi Ar-Rimma. In addition, the study manifested the excellence of Ka'b in presenting the animal in poetry, as he provided the required motifs like color, movement and other motifs that gave life to these images. The researcher recommends that the psychological frame of mind of Ka'b should be further traced in his presentation of animal, and that his works should be studied from a stylistic perspective so that the different aspects of his poetic language can be explored and be related to his psychological frame of mind and the impact it leaves on the reader.
