dc.description.abstractThe study was carried out to investigate the effect of hearing impairment of children on parents mental health in Gaza Strip. It aims to examine differences in mental health among parents of children with hearing impairment and its relation with other socio-demographic variables. Descriptive analytic cross sectional design used for all parents who have registered children at the deaf schools. The number of parents who respond to the study was 97%. SCL-90-R was used as an instrument to measure the level of parents mental health. Internal consistency was calculated and its correlation was from 0.596 to 0.967; and validity was calculated by using retest and split half method. The main results of the study showed that there are statistically significant differences between fathers and mothers in general mental health and its dimensions. The means for fathers and mothers general mental health, for depression, obsessive compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, somatization, psychoticism, paranoiac ideation, phobic anxiety and hostility as follow : for fathers it was (50.6, 8.60, 7.94, 6.33, 4.83, 4.51,3.41 3.91, 3.38, 3.10) respectively; and for mothers (69.2, 11.64, 9.24, 7.98, 7.90, 7.64, 5.19, 4.41, 4.58, 4.66) respectively. Also, the results revealed that there are no statistically significant differences in general mental health between parents who have 1-2 children with hearing impairment and those who had 3 and more childrenThere are no statistically significant differences in the general mental health between fathers according to the sex of the children. However, the study revealed that there are statistically significant differences in general mental health toward mothers of female children. There are no statistically significant differences in the general mental health between fathers due to the severity of the children hearing impairment. There are statistically significant differences in the general mental health toward mothers of children with moderate hearing loss. The results showed that place of residence did not influence the general mental health of parents. Level of education of parents was statistically significant differences for general mental health of parents. The study recommended the establishment of a comprehensive awareness program for parents of children with hearing impairment in order to help them to deal and cope with their children hearing impairment.en
