Abstract
This study explores the Asian regional organizations within the period from 1967 to 2014. The study problem investigates the role of ASEAN in balancing between its political, security, economic, social and cultural interests, as a regional organization that has regional and international influence, and the interests of the member countries. The study is significance in the sense that it introduces the reader to the concept and characteristics of international organizations. It further manifests the concept of regional organization in general and the Asian organizations in particular and the role of ASEAN in achieving its goals in terms of its foreign relations and its security and economic problems. To answer the study's questions and problem, the researcher adopted the historic methodology, which investigates the time period which extended from 1967 to 2014, referring to different time periods that enrich the studied topic. Moreover, the study also adopted the descriptive methodology, which assisted in describing the historic events, and the relations that exist among south East Asian countries. In light of the above, the study consisted of five main chapters. The first chapter introduces a background on the study focusing on the methodology and its requirements in terms of the problem and hypothesis. The second chapter addresses the theoretical frame and previous studies. The third chapter focused on the Asian regional associations that were founded before the collapse of the Soviet Union, within the period from 1966 to 2014. The fourth chapter focused on the Asian regional associations that were founded after the collapse of the Soviet Union, within the period from 1991 – 2014. The fifth chapter addressed the ASEAN through providing a historic, geographic and demographic introduction about Southeast Asian countries concentrating on its establishment, structure, goals and principles, in addition to ASEAN's foreign relations with international economic organizations and with other nonmember countries. The main results that the study concluded to is the ability of ASEAN to balance between its interests and the interest of other member countries, and to accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community with stable political and economic situation. In addition to non-interference in international and regional conflicts that prevailed during that period. As well as setting mechanisms to ensure that Southeast Asian Nations avoid any و international conflicts or struggles, and the success of ASEAN to build a cultural, political relations, economic and culture with non-members countries.
