The level of self esteem among mothers of children with cancer and their level of anxiety at Beit Jala Government Hospital / The Huda Al Masri Pediatric Cancer Department. The researcher used analytical descriptive approach. For the purpose of achieving the study objectives, the researcher conducted self structured interviews with mothers and their children. The study tools were conducted on an intentional sample available for the study consisting of (10) cases of children and mothers residing and following up The Huda Al Masri Pediatric Cancer Department. The study concluded that the degree of self esteem among mothers of children with cancer ranged from low to high due to duration of illness variable. However, the impact of other variables on the level of self esteem was not detected. The study also found out a disparity in mothers’ degree of anxiety which ranged from severe to mild. Results of content analysis indicated a discrepancy in degrees of self esteem and anxiety among mothers which was greatly influenced by duration of disease. The more the child undergoes therapy, the higher is mother’s self esteem and lower anxiety. It was also found that the higher the degree of mothers’ self esteem, the lower is their degree of anxiety and vice versa. Results of content analysis indicated an increase in degrees of self esteem and drop in degrees of anxiety which basically depended on sources of support to mothers. Results of content analysis also indicated that sources of support available for mothers are the main influential elements in adjustment or maladjustment with crisis. Some mothers expressed their satisfaction with these services and thanks to it, they were able to overcome the crisis while there was a counter point of view of newly experienced mothers of children with cancer. The study also found out a variance in the degree of children anxiety that ranged from great to mild. This is significantly linked to mother’s psychological situation followed by the side-effects of cancer therapy. Study results indicate that high and low degree of mothers’ self esteem and anxiety influences high and low degree of children anxiety. Following these results and discussion, the researcher made several recommendations most important of which is the significance of drawing more attention to the psychological health of mothers’ of children with cancer through putting forward intervention plan by which the specialist in the department could change misconceptions about cancer. Moreover, a father must share responsibility with the mother in taking care of their ill child and other children. They need to complement one another in performing their roles in a manner that assists the mother to have a psychological and social harmony to enable her overcome this crisis.
