dc.description.abstract | This thesis aims to study the Jordanian American relationship during the decade of the 1990s and to evaluate the significance and impact of this relation on the political and economic stability and security of the Jordanian political system. It also investigates American influence on the economic development of Jordan. The study utilizes the historical methodology and the analytical approach to reach its conclusions. The thesis is composed of nine chapters and the conclusions. The study concludes that the second Gulf War (1990-1991) has caused a wide rift in the American Jordanian relations as a result of the clash in the policies of both nations on how to deal with the crises. On the one hand, Jordan called for an „Arab Solution‟ to the crises and for resolving the conflict peacefully. On the other hand, the United States saw that the conflict cannot be resolved except through military intervention. This made the United States classify Jordan as siding with Iraq. Eventually the United States and its allies resolved the conflict by war. Consequently Jordan was exposed to political and economic pressures resulting in the deterioration of economic conditions in Jordan. In addition, the idea of Jordan as a substitute state for Palestine was revived to undermine the stability of the Jordanian political system. However, in the aftermath of the Madrid Peace Conference held in late 1991, the Jordanian American relations began to improve and to take shape in the form of real partnership. In 1999, HM King Hussein died and his son Prince Abdullah was proclaimed king to Jordan. The transition was peaceful and the young monarch worked hard on nurturing the Jordanian relationship with the United States. The researcher recommends that Jordan continues to nurture its good relations with the United States as a strategic policy to protect its security and stability in the region, in addition to its need for economic development. | en |
