Abstract
This study aims to identify the policy of China towards the Arab States since its
independence in 1949 until 2014, especially its position of the revolutions of the Arab
Spring. The key assumption of this study is that the revolutions of the Arab Spring
contributed to developing the Arab Chinese relations. The increasing interests of China in
the Arab region contributed to developing these relations, especially in light of the state of
disorder which clearly and openly threatens these interests in the Arab region.
The researcher is interested in this study due to the strategic importance of China as an
economic, political and military power with strong influence on international and regional
politics. It mainly concentrated on the nature of the Arab Chinese relationship during the
period between 1949 -2014, demonstrating China’s position of the Arab revolutions that
broke out in late 2010.
The researcher used the historical and descriptive approaches through an historic narrative
of the Arab Chinese relationship and description and analysis of the Chinese position of the
revolutions of the Arab Spring.
It concluded that the Arab Chinese relationship is a structure of historical elements that
went through several stages of crisis and détente and that these historical elements played a
significant role in strengthening this relationship. It also concluded that the determinants of
this relationship and China’s fear of losing it affected its position of the Arab Spring.
China dealt with the Arab Spring revolutions attentively and cautiously. It always called
for solving differences and disputes internally in accordance with the principle of
sovereignty, refusing interference with domestic affairs.
Political and socio-economic factors contributed to the start of the Arab Spring revolutions.
The adverse conduct of the regimes towards their peoples pushed them to call for change.
They suffered from poverty, ignorance and fear because of the policies of these regimes.
These revolutions affected the Arab Chinese relationship and the Chinese position of these
revolutions due to a number of scenarios that pushed China to intervene in the Arab region
and observe its revolutions.
