Abstract
The study that we have at hand, “The Palestinian Left Movements after Oslo”
aims at making the researchers and the concerned aware of the reality of these
movements that have played, since their establishment, an important, effective
and distinguished role in the political, struggle and social activities of the
whole Palestinian national movement. These days, however, the Left
movements face a real crisis that has negatively affected the reality of both
the National and the Palestinian society. This crisis has made them move back
many steps and caused a political and social confusion in the Palestinian
society.
The study is also an attempt to analyze the reality of the Palestinian Left
movements at a significant and serious juncture, the Oslo and the post-Oslo
stage, in the life and history of the Palestinian people. The study focuses on
the roles of three main left movements, namely: The Palestinian People’s
Party (which is an extension of the Palestinian Communist Party), the Popular
Front of the Liberation of Palestine and the Democratic Front of the
Liberation of Palestine.
The study also attempts to answer a number of questions in four chapters. The
first chapter focuses on the rise of the “Palestinian Left Movements” by
discussing the rise of the above mentioned factions and their various struggle
stages.
The second chapter focuses on the “Attitude and Roles of the Palestinian Left
Movements”. It discusses the reality in which the Left movements lived
before and after signing the Oslo agreement. Then it presents the positions
and the roles of the Left movements in four important issues: the Peace
Process, the Palestinian National Authority, the means of resistance and their
relationships with the Palestinian masses.
The third chapter focuses on “the Crisis of the Palestinian Left Movements
and its Causes”. It discusses this crisis and its objective, intellectual,
organizational, political and social causes and their reflections on the three
mentioned Leftist powers.
The fourth chapter focuses on “the Future and the Desired Roles of the Palestinian Left Movements”. It discusses the future of the Left movements as
seen by analysts, observers and the concerned. It also discusses the attempts
made to unificate these movements, their renaissance requirements and the
desired roles that they must play.
The study has reached some important results. The Palestinian Left
Movements suffer from a real crisis that made them lose their effective and
initiative roles, especially after the signing of the Oslo agreement and the
establishment of the Palestinian National Authority. Moreover, the Left
movements did not take advantage of the transition that has occurred in the
Palestinian National Movement and did not deal with the important results of
this transition. This matter has deepened the crisis and even made it worse.
The most important recommendations of the thesis are: the Palestinian Left
movements must recognize and understand the crisis, as this is the only way
to emerge from it. In addition, they must work hard to unify their powers,
reorganize their ranks and reconsider the realism of their intellectual
doctrines, their relationships with the masses and the vitality of their political
and social agenda
