Abstract
This study focuses on Chinese foreign policy towards Syria. It tries to explore the reasons and objectives of this policy, in the context of the development of China’s politics towards the Middle East. This study also focuses on the changes which have taken place in the Chinese foreign policy after the cold war. The cold war has produced different effects on the world, such as the change in the international system from a bi-polar system to a unipolar system led by the United States, and the transition from military conflict to an economic conflict. This study examines as well Chinese foreign policy towards Syria during the since before the cold war until now. The researcher is interested in the subject of the study because of the growing role of China as one of the influential countries in global decision-making. The importance of the study emanates from the importance of China and its economic and military strength in the world. The theme of the study is to observe the change in Chinese foreign policy, and to find out if this change is strategic or just tactical. The study tries to achieve a number of goals; the most important one is identifying the characteristics of China's foreign policy in general during the period between 1949 and 2014, and towards Syria in particular during the same period. The researcher used the descriptive and historical approaches to accomplish his objective. The research results indicate that the shift in Chinese foreign policy during the years of the Arab Spring is just tactical. China’s intervention in the Syrian crisis is inseparable from achieving its objectives. China does not care whether the Syrian regime stays or goes as long as it (China) accomplishes its interests specially that it is on the front line of defense for a number of allied states such as Iran and Federal Russia. China intervened in the Syrian crises for a variety of reasons that determine its relations with other countries such as the USA. Needless to say, that China rejects the control of the USA on the energy resources in deferent part of the world.
