Abstract
Independence by the Palestinian liberation movement along side an independent decision making process is considered a significant step towards overcoming colonialism. That is possible by allowing Palestinians to control their destiny in seeking national independence. As one of many Palestinian movements, the national movement cannot succeed in ending the Israeli occupation without ensuring its independence and ownership over the nation’s decision process. This thesis explores the complex relationship between the Palestinian national movement and its independent decision-making and ruling, while providing historical context spanning from the Nakbeh in 1948 up until the year 2014. This study is a result of the author’s reflection on the high cost Palestinians paid as the leadership relinquished its independence to Arab leaders in 1936. Based on that understanding the author reviews the national movement’s ability to reclaim its independence and maintain it over the years through various military and political battles. This study addresses the significance of the independent rule to the Palestinian cause, in addition to exploring the dangers and obstacles that independent rule faces. On the forefront of these dangers is the Zionist agenda embodied by the Israeli occupation. Another risk investigated by this study is the internal division amongst Palestinians and the absence of a unified political program. While globalization and the global economic crisis have also created an obstacle to the independence of this rule. The author concludes his thesis with an analysis of the biggest challenge facing the decision process yet. That challenge posed by Political Islam and represented by Hamas’ take over of the Gaza. A challenge that the author believes can end Palestinian’s ownership over their destiny and independence and will cause the conclusion of the Palestinian cause.
