Abstract
This study aimed to illustrate the most important symbols which the poetess used in her talk about self, society and the palestinian national cause. Fadwa Toqan is one of the Arab contemporary literary figures who occupied her position and tried hard to develop her poetic experience regardless the masculine limitations, habits and culture in society. The poetess used symbol as a means to express what was there in her depths and its reactions with self, society and her national cause. Symbols are not vague in her poetry , which enables people to discover a lot of clues and hints which symbol contains. The multiplicity of sources of symbol which ranges from self, heritage , religious, historical and literary sources has made it possible to express contents and to benefit from her experience. Sometimes the poetess is not limited to a reference clue for her symbols but inspires the clues of such symbols from a psychological relationship which links it with different life phenomena. The poetess used the natural items a lot and in a semantic symbolic way. The poetess was able to make the details of nature and life sources of inspiration of what was there in her heart. This study opens the way for more research and mentions some issues that need more elaboration and investigation such as the study of symbolism in the prose of Fadwa Toqan ( i.e. her biography) as well as the study of symbol in the poetry of the Palestinian and Arab poets since such studies enrich the Arabic literature and criticism.
