Abstract
This study examines the determinants of cash flow patterns coming from the1948 Palestinians towards the West Bank, The study was limited to two phenomena: First, the the mobility of visitors to Palestinian territories for the purpose of shopping and consumption of services including tourism and entertainment, whereas the previous studies focused on the cross-border shopping in an independent environments, this study is considered to be the the first empirical study that talks about different classes of the same population living in one geographical area which used to constitute a single coherent entity six decades ago, but it is now subjected to a single occupying control system with different tools. The study also assumed that the demographic and economic variables, the variables of goods and services and variation of the shopping areas are all of importance and affect the flow of visitors around the cities of the West Bank. Second: the students enrollment from the 1948 Palestinians in the Palestinian universities, and the attractive Palestinian factors and Israeli repellent factors affecting it. The study focused on the determinants and factors affecting the size of cash flows associated with these phenomena. In spite of the lack of research dealing with this subject, previous available studies were used to collect information and data. as was the descriptive analytical method .To achieve the objectives of the study, three quantitative models were derived to determine the factors that stand behind the arrival of visiting shoppers from the 1948 Palestinians, to the West Bank. To measure the impact of these factors, questionnaire and interviews with active figures or individuals in this area were carried out, so as to collect the primary data which helped to describe the variables depending on the relative frequencies. To estimate the three models, Multiple Regression has been used to find the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable. With regard to the phenomenon of Higher Education, a questionnaire designed specifically for this purpose has been distributed to 1948 Palestinian students studying in the Arab American University in Jenin and the Hebron University about the students' motivation to study in Palestinian universities and estimate the size of their spending.. The results of the study indicated the size of annual cash flows received from the economy of the 1948 Palestinians towards the economy of the West Bank as a result of shopping is around 218.6 million dollars, which included a commodity spending worth of 143.7 million dollars, and spending on services valued at 74.9. million dollars. The size of the annual expenditure for the 1948 Palestinian students enrolled in higher education is about 55.2 million dollars which included internal spending worth of 11.9 million dollars and external spending valued at 43.2 million dollars. These flows represent approximately 17% of the total Palestinian exports of goods and services, as those flows represent 12% of the volume of retail Palestinian trade. It was found that the primary purpose of the 1948 Palestinians visit to the West Bank Is the demand concentrated on making shopping, tourism services, entertainment consumption, followed by a visit to their relatives, and to spend their weekends. The low prices of commodities and the variety of goods and services were the main motives behind the high demand on goods and services in the West Bank markets, in addition to some of the determinants of demographic factors, where the results showed that the rate of spending increases by the following variables: The increasing number of family members, and the age group between 41 and 50 years. It was found that 78% of visiting shoppers are married and this is an indication that shopping is more of a family activity. The low-income individual had a positive impact on the rate of spending, and that shows their dependence on markets in the West Bank since their income level doesn’t have a strong purchasing power parity in the Israeli markets. Thus, they find West Bank markets the best for their income level. The determinants of 1948 Palestinians students’ enrollment in the Palestinians Universities are related to main influential factors, these factors are: The difficult requirements for admissions into the Israeli univerities. The fact that the matriculation certificate is sufficient to join the Palestinian universities, and the certificates of Palestinian universities are recognized by Israel. In addition to other assisting factorsthe orientation of education in Palestinian universities is enforced directly. The study recommends that the regulatory bodies in charge of setting price should control prices through the activation of product pricing and not to exploit the visitors to keep the tourism phenomenon since it contributes to the revitalization of the local economy, and provides a wide range of products and services to lure the age group least likely to attend, as well as high-income people.,
